About

Rinpung Dzong (Paro Dzong)

Rinpung Dzong is an imposing Buddhist monastery as well as a fortress nestled in Paro district of Bhutan. This prominent site located in the Paro Valley finely exemplifies the Bhutanese churchly architecture that features towering walls, courtyards, sacred shrines, administrative offices and monks’ accommodation. The history of RinpungDrong dates back to the 16th century when it was constructed by Ngawang Namgyal, utilizing the foundation of a monastery established by Guru Rinpoche.

Dzong’s intricate wooden carvings and details found throughout the complex enhance its majestic appearance. Rinpung Dzong makes a significant venue for hosting an annual religious festival, Paro Tshechu. The famed jollification magnetizes an array of pilgrims and tourists from all over the country and outside.
