Motithang Takin Preserve (Thimphu)
Motithang Takin Preserve, which is a mini-zoo turned preserve, is a protected area where the national animal of Bhutan, Takin, is preserved. Numerous exclusive and exotic birds and animals wander around the area freely and in the most natural of habitat. This wildlife setting is positioned in the Motithang district in Thimphu, the Royal Takin Preserve was originally a mini-zoo but later turned into a wildlife preserve. The reason for such circumstances was upon a king’s decision of finding it unfair to bind its national animals within definite boundaries and hence declared the area as a wildlife preserve.
This 8-acre fenced location houses Takin, musk deer and barking deer. It is also said to have been under plans to include other rare animals like the Red Panda and Himalayan Serow. In conclusion, Motithang Takin Preserve makes one of the most popular sites in Bhutan for being a wildlife wonder, coupled with a serene environment and a quaint ambiance, which moreover enhances the preserve’s charm.
